Pepper City
Pfefferstadt (Polish Ulica Korzenna ) is a street in Gdansk . It is located in the western part of the old town north of the Radaune Canal .
history
In the 14th century the street became a center of the old town. In 1383 the old town hall was rebuilt. The earliest mention of the Pfeffergasse is from 1399 . The name was apparently derived from spice dealers who were among the wealthiest merchants in town. The name Pfefferstadt has been in use since the 16th century .
In the 17th century the astronomer Johannes Hevelius built an observatory on the roofs of his houses in Pfefferstadt.
In the late 19th century the entire street was built with new magnificent buildings. At that time it was one of the richest in the old town, but its importance was behind the important shopping streets of the right-wing town . There were workshops, breweries, two bank branches, two hotels, shops, as well as the homes of merchants, senior and low-level employees and workers, including some railway employees from the nearby central station.
In 1945 the street was completely destroyed. Apart from the town hall, no historical buildings have survived. In 2006 a new monument was erected for the astronomer Johannes Hevelius.
