The Institute for Contemporary Church History of the Recklinghausen Church District (IKZG-RE) is an institution of the Recklinghausen Evangelical Church District for the scientific processing of the history of the Recklinghausen Church District and the history of church districts as the middle level of church administration inside and outside the regional church of Westphalia (until 1945: Church Province Westphalia in the Protestant Church of the Old Prussian Union). It was founded in 1990 on the initiative of the regional church historian Helmut Geck (1931-2010) and the then superintendent Rolf Sonnemann (1940-1994) by the Recklinghausen parish. The first director was Helmut Geck. Since 2010 the IKZG-RE has been led by Albrecht Geck , church historian in Osnabrück .

The IKZG-RE has a reference library for general church history , Westphalian church history, in particular the church and religious history of the Ruhr area as well as the history of the Recklinghausen church district and its communities. It is organizationally linked to the "Archive of the Recklinghausen Church District" and the "Recklinghausen Church District Museum".

The IKZG-RE cooperates with historical associations and institutions at the regional level (Association for Orts- und Heimatkunde; Institut für Stadtgeschichte Recklinghausen etc.), at the territorial level (Association for Westphalian Church History, Institute for Westphalian Church History) and at the national level (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Deutsche Regional church history).

The IKZG-RE organizes study conferences to research the history of church districts at irregular intervals. The results of the conference are published in the institute's own "Green Series", the Recklinghausen Forum on the History of Church Circles (RFGK).

During the Reformation Decade and for the Reformation anniversary in 2017 , the IKZG-RE emerged with a special research focus on the visual Luther memoria. The highlights of this work were a mobile exhibition from Cranach to the BILD newspaper. 500 years of church and cultural history in the mirror of Luther portraits as well as the exhibition Luther in the sights of the pictures , which the IKZG-RE carried out in cooperation with the Vestische Museum der Stadt Recklinghausen.
