Nursing assistant

Nursing assistant (abbreviation: PFA) is a healthcare profession in Austria that was introduced with the amendment to the Health and Nursing Act (GuKG) in 2016.

Job description and activities

Nursing assistants are proficient in the field of nursing assistance (PA), but have more skills and perform additional tasks. Among other things, they carry out organizational work and independently carry out measures that have been assigned to them by qualified nurses or doctors as part of diagnostics and therapy, participate in the nursing assessment and monitor the state of health of their patients. They also guide trainees of nursing assistants in their practical work.

Their qualifications entitle nursing assistants to perform standardized examinations such as B. ECG, EEG and pulmonary function tests, inserting or removing urinary catheters (in women) or gastric tubes, connecting or removing certain infusions and using electrically operated movement rails (according to the specified setting). In emergencies, they must call the doctor immediately and take certain emergency life-saving measures. These include B. chest compressions and ventilation with simple ventilation aids, the administration of oxygen and, if necessary, defibrillation .

education

Since September 2016 there has been a two-year training (full-time) as a nursing assistant with a total of 3200 hours. It is taken in schools for health and nursing. At the end, a written thesis is written in the department. After an oral examination by a committee , the diploma that entitles you to practice the profession is handed out.

Members of the care assistant professions are obliged to complete 40 hours of advanced training within five years.
