The one-year training takes place at health and nursing schools and includes theory lessons with 800 hours and internships with 800 hours.

The theory includes professional ethics and professional knowledge, health and nursing, care of the elderly, palliative care, home nursing, hygiene and infection theory, nutrition with sick and diet food, basics of somatology, pathology, gerontology, geriatrics and geriatric psychiatry, basics of pharmacology, first aid, animation and Motivation to organize leisure time, basic features of rehabilitation and mobilization, professions and institutions in health and social services, management, introduction to psychology, sociology and social hygiene, communication and conflict management, profession-specific legal bases.

With initial vocational training - with exceptions in individual cases - only the two-year training as a nursing assistant can be completed in order to ensure the associated rights (such as occupational protection in the event of unemployment).

Training opportunities

After two years of full-time practice, a shortened two-year training course to become a qualified nurse is possible.

Nursing assistance as part of individual social care professions

Some social care professions include the qualification to be a nursing assistant. These include specialist or diploma social workers specializing in work with the elderly and the disabled and diploma social workers specializing in family work.

In contrast, social workers specializing in accompanying the disabled and home helpers are only allowed to provide support with basic care, including support in taking and using medication, if their training has included the corresponding module. The prerequisite for this is the arrangement and supervision of a member of the higher-level health and nursing service.

There is also the profession of caregiver in 24-hour care , where, by order and under the supervision of the high-level service of health and nursing, collaboration in health and nursing is possible.

Nursing assistant

The amendment to the Health and Nursing Act created a new qualification level in the health care professions with the nursing assistant . The training also takes place in schools for health and nursing and lasts two years with a total of 3200 hours.
