Nursing Assistant (Austria)
Care assistance with the job title of nursing assistant and nursing assistants in Austria a regulated with federal law health care professional with a one-year training (1600 hours). Nursing assistants work according to instructions and under the supervision of the high-level service of the health and nursing staff in health care and nursing . In addition, nursing assistants work with doctors in therapeutic and diagnostic tasks according to a written medical order and under the supervision of the high-level service of health and nurses. Part of the care assistance is also the social care of care recipients and, in particular in home care , the implementation of household chores.
Nursing assistants help with daily personal hygiene and mobilization, prepare meals and assist with eating, carry out simple blood, urine and stool tests, take care of wounds and monitor e.g. B. pulse, blood pressure, breathing and temperature of the patient. They take on tube feeding for patients with a lying gastric tube, take blood from the vein and perform simple heat, cold and light applications. The area of responsibility also includes the administration of micro and single enema and - in stable nursing situations - suction from the upper airways and the tracheostoma. In addition, nursing assistants are authorized to administer drugs that are given locally, transdermally, and via the gastrointestinal or respiratory tract, as well as subcutaneous injections of insulin or anti-coagulant solutions.
education
The one-year training takes place at health and nursing schools and includes theory lessons with 800 hours and internships with 800 hours.
The theory includes professional ethics and professional knowledge, health and nursing, care of the elderly, palliative care, home nursing, hygiene and infection theory, nutrition with sick and diet food, basics of somatology, pathology, gerontology, geriatrics and geriatric psychiatry, basics of pharmacology, first aid, animation and Motivation to organize leisure time, basic features of rehabilitation and mobilization, professions and institutions in health and social services, management, introduction to psychology, sociology and social hygiene, communication and conflict management, profession-specific legal bases.
The internship takes place in acute care in the operative department of a hospital (160 hours), in acute care in the conservative department of a hospital (160 hours), in long-term care / rehabilitation care in an institution (nursing home, old people's home) with an inpatient area (320 hours ) and in extramural care / home nursing or in a day center (160 hours).
All theoretical units, such as internships, must be successfully completed in individual exams. The certificate is issued with a final examination before a committee .
With initial vocational training - with exceptions in individual cases - only the two-year training as a nursing assistant can be completed in order to ensure the associated rights (such as occupational protection in the event of unemployment).
Training opportunities
After two years of full-time practice, a shortened two-year training course to become a qualified nurse is possible.
Nursing assistance as part of individual social care professions
Some social care professions include the qualification to be a nursing assistant. These include specialist or diploma social workers specializing in work with the elderly and the disabled and diploma social workers specializing in family work.
In contrast, social workers specializing in accompanying the disabled and home helpers are only allowed to provide support with basic care, including support in taking and using medication, if their training has included the corresponding module. The prerequisite for this is the arrangement and supervision of a member of the higher-level health and nursing service.
There is also the profession of caregiver in 24-hour care , where, by order and under the supervision of the high-level service of health and nursing, collaboration in health and nursing is possible.
Nursing assistant
The amendment to the Health and Nursing Act created a new qualification level in the health care professions with the nursing assistant . The training also takes place in schools for health and nursing and lasts two years with a total of 3200 hours.
