history

A first tunnel was built on the route between 1858 and 1860. Since it was in need of renovation after more than 150 years in operation, a new parallel tunnel has been built since January 2016. Its breakthrough took place at the beginning of May 2017. Some of the excavated material is used to backfill the historic tunnel. During a line closure between July 31, 2018 and September 9, 2018, the new tunnel was also connected to the existing railway infrastructure . The new tunnel went into operation on September 10, 2018. The construction costs amounted to around 100 million euros . The old tunnel has been backfilled since February 2019; the work should be completed in autumn 2019
