PhaST

The PhaST ( Pharmacy Study Aptitude Test ) is a subject-specific study aptitude test developed by the Universities of Freiburg , Heidelberg and Tübingen in cooperation with ITB Consulting GmbH and funded by the Ministry of Science, Research and Art of the State of Baden-Württemberg . It will be used by universities to select students from the winter semester 2020/21. The test is included in the university selection process with a weighting of 30 to 40 percent. The PhaST can also be used by universities outside Baden-Württemberg. Saarland University is the first university outside of Baden-Württemberg to use the PhaST.

The PhaST was developed in 2019 on the basis of an analysis of the study requirements in pharmacy . The reason for the development was the judgment of the Federal Constitutional Court on the allocation of study places with nationwide admission restrictions. The PhaST combines subject-specific study ability modules, similar to those used in the test for medical degree programs (TMS) , with knowledge modules to record scientific school knowledge. The test tasks are developed by the universities in Baden-Württemberg and the ITB. The test development and execution takes place according to the standards of psychological aptitude diagnostics , as they are u. a. can be described in DIN 33430 . In October 2019, the tasks were empirically tested with 272 pharmacy students, after which the final test concept was defined.

Test setup

The PhaST consists of eleven modules:

  • Text comprehension (TV)
  • Understanding and applying complex rules (VAR)
  • Linking Complex Data (VKD)
  • Work precision and concentration (ARK)
  • Spatial Thinking (RD)
  • Qualitative substance analysis (QSA)
  • Interpretation of scientific images (INA)
  • Analysis of quantitative relationships (AQZ)
  • Mathematics and Physics (MP)
  • Biology (BIO)
  • Chemistry (CHE)

Test execution

The PhaST is carried out on four test dates per year as an online test under supervision in test centers throughout Germany. Participation costs 75 euros and is possible once per calendar year. The implementation time is about 4 hours. The first PhaST took place on May 16, 2020.
