Phannias ben Samuel
Phannias ben Samuel , also Phinehas ben Samuel ( Hebrew : פנחס בן שמואל Pinhas ben Shmuel) † 70 AD was the last high priest of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in the period from 67 to 70 AD and a Jewish resistance fighter against the rule of Rome in Palestine . In contrast to his predecessors, he was not descended from the six established families who made the high priest. He was also not appointed by the king or the Roman governor, but determined by lot. Most of the evidence of Phannias ben Samuel's existence comes from Flavius Josephus , a Jewish writer and resister who switched sides and published a history of the Jewish War on behalf of the Roman emperors in AD 78 . Flavius Josephus reports consistently negative about Phannias ben Samuel . He had no experience in the priesthood. He came from a village called Aphtha. The other priests would have rejected him as a leader. According to Josephus, Phannias ben Samuel perished in the final battle for the conquest of the Jerusalem temple.
