Pheretime

Pheretime (also Pheretima ; Greek  Φερετίμη, Φερετίμα ) was a queen of Cyrene in the 6th century BC. Chr.

Pheretime was the wife of Battos III. and mother of Arkesilaos III. After he reclaimed the rights of the king and was expelled around 520/515, Pheretime fled to King Euelthon in Salamis on Cyprus and demanded military assistance from him in vain. Herodotus reports that she had received many presents, but that she was refused the promise of military aid. Finally, Euelthon gave her a gold spindle, a coat and wool with the remark that these were suitable gifts for a woman. After the reconquest of Kyrenes by her son and his flight to Barke , she ruled as queen with a seat on the council. After Arkesilaos' murder in Barke, she avenged him in a campaign against the city with the help of the Persian satrap of Egypt Aryandes and held a cruel judgment there. She died of putrefactive disease in Egypt. The main source of the history of Pheretime is Herodotus with his histories (4, 162–167; 200–205). The unusual political role of this woman quickly led to the formation of legends under the subject of the clever, vengeful queen.
