Tamás Szőnyi (born July 23, 1957 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian mathematician who deals with finite geometry .

Szönyi studied at the Loránd Eötvös University from 1976 to 1981 (diploma thesis Mathieu-csoportok geometriája , The Geometry of Mathieugruppen ) and received his doctorate there in 1987 under Ferenc Kárteszi ( Teljes ívek Galois-geometriákban , Complete arcs in Galois geometries ). In 1991 he received the title of candidate ( Aszimptotikus eredmények a véges geometriákban , Asymptotic results in finite geometries ) at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and in 2001 the doctorate ( combinatorial problems in Galois-geometriákban , combinatorial problems in Galois geometry ). From 1981 to 1987 he was research assistant at the Computer Science Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, from 1987 to 1990 he carried out research for the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in the Faculty of Computer Science at Eötvös University, where he was professor from 1992 (from 2004 with full professorship ). From 1994 to 1997 he was also a part-time professor at the Attila Jozsef University in Szeged .
