Philetus (martyr)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Philetus († allegedly 121 in Illyria ) is said to have been a martyr of the Christian church. However, the corresponding tradition is considered implausible and legendary.

In addition to Philetus, who was a senator, the Roman martyrology names his wife Lydia and his sons Macedo and Theoprepius, who were martyred with him. Philetus and his family had been handed over in Illyria by Emperor Hadrian to the general Amphilochius, who was supposed to dissuade them from their faith with torture. They are said to have been thrown into a cauldron with boiling oil and pitch and remained unharmed in it for seven days before they were executed.

Philetus and his fellow sufferers are venerated as saints . Her feast day is March 27th .
