Philip Burnell
Sir Philip Burnell († 1294 ) was an English nobleman.
Philip Burnell was the son of Hugh Burnell, the younger son of a Shropshire landowner . The family named themselves after Acton Burnell before 1192 . His father died in 1286, but Burnell owed his further rise to his uncle Robert Burnell , who was Bishop of Bath and Wells and, most importantly, as long-time Chancellor of King Edward I , was able to acquire extensive estates in the Welsh Marches and other parts of England . Robert Burnell also acquired the guardianship of the minor Richard FitzAlan , heir to the Honor of Arundel , in 1283 . This enabled him to marry his nephew Philip to Matilda FitzAlan (also Maud FitzAlan ), the sister of his ward. When his uncle Robert Burnell died in 1292, Philip inherited his extensive estates. These comprised 82 estates, 21 of which were in Shropshire, plus possessions in 18 other counties. Philip died, however, as early as 1294. When he died, he was heavily in debt.
Burnell had at least two children with his wife, Matilda FitzAlan:
- Edward Burnell, 1st Baron Burnell († 1315);
- Maud Burnell († after 1323), ⚭ (1) John Lovel, 2nd Baron Lovel , ⚭ (2) John de Haudlo († 1346).
His heir became his underage son Edward, after whose childless death his mother Maud became his heir.
