Philipp David Schwab

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Philipp David Schwab (born November 20, 1806 in Steinsfurt , † August 22, 1864 in Hockenheim ) was a Baden author, economist and mayor of the community of Hockenheim from 1854 to 1857.

At the time, Schwab was a "well-known tobacco grower" who made a name for himself in growing tobacco in Baden and the Palatinate. On behalf of the Agricultural Association of the Grand Duchy of Baden, he made a trip to the Netherlands in 1851 to study the tobacco growing methods of the Dutch, which are considered exemplary. He published his results in 1852 in the book "Tobacco growing in the Palatinate and in Holland". The text appeared in abbreviated form in the same year as an appendix in the work "Tobacco and its cultivation" by Hoffacker and von Babo.

In 1852, the Bavarian Prince Regent Luitpold entrusted Schwab with the planning of a tobacco shed in the southern Palatinate municipality of Harthausen . Schwab took the Alsatian tobacco shed as a model. The listed shed is one of the oldest in the Palatinate and is now used as a community center.

A street in Hockenheim, Philipp-Schwab-Straße, is named after him.
