Philip II of Wildenburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The knight Philipp II of Wildenburg lived between 1234/1272 in the rulership of Wildenburg in the Eifel and on the Wildburg near Treis-Karden .

His father Philipp von Reifferscheid built the Wildenburg in the Eifel in the Schleiden district at the beginning of the 12th century and named himself after it. By marrying Irmgard von Braunshorn , the family came into possession of the Trier fiefdom of the Wildburg (formerly Wildenburg) near Treis around 1235. With part of the Braunshorn inheritance, the couple endowed the re-establishment of the Maria Engelport monastery , into which their three daughters and other Dominican women from a monastery in the Ardennes moved in in 1262. Blessed Beatrix von Engelport was probably one of them . In 1272 the choir women turned to the Premonstratensian Order , which is likely to be due to the close spatial relationship between the Wildenburg rulership and the Steinfeld Premonstratensian Monastery .

The couple's three sons, Friedrich, Philipp III. and Gerhard, as well as the relatives of the wife, were well-disposed towards Engelport monastery and distinguished themselves through donations. The son Johann was canon of Trier.

In 1277 the grandson Ernst von Wildenberg (son of Friedrich) can be traced as a canon in the Ravengiersburg monastery and from 1328 to 1344 a Katharina von Wildenberg is mentioned as prioress in Engelport.

Philip II of Wildenberg was a vassal of the Archbishop of Cologne and was one of his permanent advisors. Again and again he acted as an arbiter of divided parties.
