Philippa Plantagenet, 5th Countess of Ulster

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Philippa Plantagenet, 5th Countess of Ulster , (* August 16, 1355 - January 5, 1382 ) was the only daughter of Lionel of Antwerp, 1st Duke of Clarence , the third son of Edward III. from England. Her mother was Elizabeth de Burgh, 4th Countess of Ulster , from whom she inherited the title of Countess of Ulster .

Philippa is Lionel's only child. She was married to Edmund Mortimer, 3rd Earl of March , who was a great-grandson of Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March , the lover of Queen Edward II , Isabella of France . Since Philippa's cousin, King Richard II , remained childless, Philippa's descendants, first her son Roger and later her grandson Edmund , were considered to be the next aspirants to the throne until Henry IV's accession to the throne of the third oldest line of the Plantagenets. York's claim to the throne in the later Wars of the Rosesled through Philippa's granddaughter Anne Mortimer and through Philippa herself in double female succession as a representative of the oldest still existing line of the royal family.

Her great-great-grandson finally ascended the English throne as Edward IV in 1461.
