Elizabeth de Burgh, 4th Countess of Ulster
Elizabeth de Burgh, 4th Countess of Ulster (born July 6, 1332 at Carrickfergus Castle , Ireland, † December 10, 1363 in Dublin ) was an Anglo-Irish noblewoman.
Elizabeth was the only child from the marriage of William de Burgh, 3rd Earl of Ulster, and Matilda of Lancaster . Her father was murdered in Ireland in June 1333 , whereupon her mother, who came from a branch of the English royal family, fled to England with little Elizabeth. Elizabeth was the heir to the title of Countess of Ulster as well as the extensive estates of the de Burgh family. Large parts of these possessions, especially those in Ulster, Northern Ireland, fell into the hands of Irish rebels after the death of their father. The young Elizabeth was born on August 15, 1342 in the Tower of London with Lionel of Antwerp , a younger son of the English King Edward III. , married, the marriage was consummated in 1352. When her paternal grandmother Elizabeth de Clare died in 1360 , Elizabeth inherited other estates in Ireland, England and Wales. Her husband Lionel was then elevated to the Duke of Clarence on November 13, 1362 as the owner of large parts of the Clare family's lands . On July 1, 1361, Lionel had been appointed Royal Lieutenant of Ireland , where he tried to restore English rule over the lost territories. Elizabeth went to Ireland with him, but died in Dublin in 1363. Her body was transferred to England at the expense of the Crown and buried in Clare Priory in Suffolk , the traditional burial place of the Clare family.
With her husband Lionel of Antwerp she had a daughter, Philippa Plantagenet, 5th Countess of Ulster (1355-1382), who became the heir to her title and her possessions.
