Philippe MPJ Maystadt (born March 14, 1948 in Petit-Rechain ; † December 7, 2017 ) was a Belgian politician at the Center Démocrate Humaniste (cdH) and professor at the Université catholique de Louvain ( Louvain-la-Neuve ). From January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2011, he was President of the European Investment Bank (EIB).

Life

Maystadt was a member of the Belgian Chamber of Deputies from 1977 to 1991 and 1998 to 1999 . From 1978 to 1979 he worked for his party as "Political Secretary" . At the same time he was a member of the Wallonia Economic Council (CERW). Maystadt then became State Secretary to the Minister of the Wallonia Region. From 1980 to 1995 Maystadt was a member of the Council of the French Community. From 1980 he was also Minister for Public Administration and Science Policy, charged with coordinating environmental policy and from 1981 Minister for Budget, Science Policy and Financial Planning.

Maystadt changed the area of ​​responsibility several times. From 1985 he was Minister of Economic Affairs, from 1986 Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, from 1988 Finance Minister and from 1995 Deputy Prime Minister, Finance and Foreign Trade Minister. In 1998 his work in the executive branch ended. From 1998 to 1999 he headed the Center Démocrate Humaniste. In 1989 he became a professor at the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) in Louvain-la-Neuve. Maystadt was also active outside of Belgium and worked from 1993 to 1998 as chairman of the interim committee of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

He ended his mandate as EIB President on December 31, 2011. He was succeeded by the German Werner Hoyer .
