The Philippine Head is a rocky promontory of volcanic origin of the island Heard in the southern Indian Ocean . It is located at the northwest end of the Laurens Peninsula .
The headland is named after the German geologist Emil Philippi (1871-1910), who undertook investigations into volcanism on Heard during the Gauss expedition (1901-1903) under the direction of Erich von Drygalski .
