Phoinike was an ancient city in which to Epirus associated landscape Chaonia . The ruins of the city are in the immediate vicinity of the city of Delvina in southern Albania near the present-day village of Finiq on a 272 meter high hill. To the south a plain extends to the Butrint lagoon .

Phoinike already existed in the 5th century BC. And is also attested in late antiquity. The Illyrian attack on the city in 230 BC. Chr. Contributed to the intervention and thus also to the expansion of the Romans on the east coast of the Adriatic.

In the first Macedonian War (215–205 BC) the League of Epirots sympathized with Philip V , but efforts were made to mediate between the warring parties. So it happened in 205 BC. For the peace conference of Phoinike , during which the Romans, Macedonians, Epirotians and Aetolians tried to come to terms with each other . At least the Epiroten and thus Chaonia and Phoinike were spared from the war in the following years.

The city's bishop took part in the Council of Ephesus in 431 .

The first excavations were carried out by Luigi Maria Ugolini in the 1920s . Phoinike is now being excavated and examined jointly by Albanian and Italian archaeologists. In 2006 a theater was discovered.
