Phonemics

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Phonemics is a linguistic term that is used differently depending on the context . It is used today as:

  • Synonymous with phonology or as
  • Generic term for (segmental) phonology and prosody

The term phonematics also has the same meanings , which is why the two terms are also regarded as synonyms.

Historically, the term was used in American structuralism to differentiate it from the European structuralism of the Prague School as a term for synchronic phonology, since the term “phonology” has been linked to diachronic approaches since the time of the young grammarians .
