Photosynth was a panorama and 3D modeling software published by Microsoft Live Labs that combined Photo Tourism and Seadragon . It can be used to combine photos of known locations from various sources into a 3D space , through which the user can then move. Panorama images can also be created. When putting together the photos, the generation of the 3D space and the assembly ( "stitching") of panoramas, the software works automatically. It recognizes outlines, objects, camera positions and angles; on this basis, the images are linked to one another. In the Windows Phone and Apple iOS version of Photosynth, the panorama is already merged when it is captured (by the app ).

Since it is possible to integrate panorama views and 3D photo rooms (so-called "synths") that were created with Photosynth in Bing Maps , the combination of Photosynth and Bing Maps competes with Google Street View . While Google Street View can only provide views of places that can be seen from the car, the combination of Photosynth and Bing Maps offers expanded options: Views of places that are away from paths and streets can be recorded, and it is also possible To incorporate images of building interiors.

As announced in November 2016, the Photosynth service from Microsoft Live Labs was discontinued on February 6, 2017. With the shutdown of the servers, all synths and panoramas were permanently deleted if they were not previously backed up by the users on private computers.

compatibility

The software requires Microsoft Silverlight and is compatible with the web browsers Internet Explorer , Firefox and Apple Safari . A Windows Live ID is required to create your own synths . Only Microsoft operating systems are currently supported for computers, but under Mac OS X and Linux it is possible to view synths using Moonlight . There is also Photosynth as an app for Windows Phone and iOS (which, however, only supports the creation of panoramas). At the beginning of July 2015, the app version of Photosynth was discontinued for both iOS and Windows Phone. The associated website will also be switched off in February 2017.
