Moonlight is a free and open source implementation of Microsoft Silverlight that was developed by the Mono project . Version 1.0 of the project was released on January 20, 2009.

Status and development plan

In an interview at the beginning of June 2007, Miguel de Icaza said that the Mono team expected to be able to present a feasibility study by mid-June 2007 and also to support the Firefox browser on Linux by the end of the year .

After a three-week “hack orgy” by the Mono team (including Chris Toshok , Larry Ewing and Jeffrey Stedfast ), a public demo version was presented at the Microsoft ReMIX conference in Paris , France on June 21, 2007.

Nevertheless, in September 2007 developers still had to compile and install a large part of the Mono and Olive modules (the experimental Mono sub-project with .NET 3.0 support) from the Mono SVN repository in order to test Moonlight. A Moonlight IDE called Lunar Eclipse for XAML designs exists in the SVN repository. It is to be included as an add-on in MonoDevelop in the future.

Moonlight is currently offered as a Firefox plug-in for some versions of Firefox under various Linux distributions. The users are advised that the versions that can currently be downloaded are only snapshots of the current development and are therefore neither complete nor function properly. In particular, the support of Firefox 3 is known to be flawed. The plugin itself does not come with a codec pack, but once the Moonlight plugin detects playable media, the user will be directed to download the free media codec pack from Microsoft.

The first complete and current version Moonlight 2.0 supports the specification of Silverlight in version 2.0 and was published on December 17th, 2009. It also includes some features of Silverlight 3.

The preview version of Moonlight 4, released in February 2011, already fully supports Silverlight 3.0 and partially Silverlight 4.0.

In May 2012, Miguel de Icaza announced that the development of Moonlight for Linux would be discontinued.

Moonlight uses the Cairo library for rendering.
