Phycocyanobilin (chromophoric group)

Phycocyanin (PC) belongs to the phycobilins and acts as an accessory pigment in photosynthesis in cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), but is also found in red algae and glaucophyta . Phycocyanin appears purple to cobalt blue in color .

Its absorption maximum is in blue-green algae ( Aphanizomenon flos aquae ) at a wavelength of 615 nm. In various red algae its absorption spectrum has two peaks, with maxima around 550 nm and - more pronounced - at 615 nm.

The blue chromophoric group in phycocyanin is phycocyanobilin . It is covalently linked to the protein backbone of the phycocyanin via an L - cysteine .
