Aphanizomenon is a genus of Cyanobacteria (previously called "blue-green algae"). Typical representatives are the slim water needle ( A. gracile ) and the green span alga (or sickle alga of carp pond farming ) ( A. flos-aquae ).

20 to 50 cells of each aphanizomenon species form thread-like colonies, which in turn cluster together in clusters so that macroscopically visible aggregates arise. These float in the water and create the impression of larch needles . A. flos-aquae in particular occurs in abundance in the form of water flowers (name!). Carp breeders mistakenly value them as a sign of good fertility in the affected pond, and their occurrence unmistakably indicates a one-sided phosphate over- fertilization.
