Epiphyllum thomasianum is a species of plant in the genus Epiphyllum from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Epiphyllum thomasianum grows bushy and upwards and reaches a height of up to 4 meters. The upright, bent over or hanging main shoots are at the base for 30 centimeters rotating, angular or winged, flattened above. The flattened part is 8 to 75 inches long and 8 to 12.5 inches wide. The green lanceolate to elliptical side shoots appear from the lower part of the main shoots. They appear in 2 to 6 rows, are round at the base, flattened above. Their edges are notched. The woolly areoles can have long hair.

The saucer- to funnel-shaped, cream-colored flowers appear from the flattened parts of the side shoots and are 28 to 34 centimeters long. The egg-shaped to elongated, smooth fruits are red or more or less purple-red.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Epiphyllum thomasianum is distributed in southern Mexico as well as in Guatemala and Nicaragua at altitudes of 1000 to 2000 meters. The first description as Phyllocactus thomasianus was published in 1895 by Karl Moritz Schumann . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put the species in the genus Epiphyllum in 1913 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
