Phylus coryli is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 4.4 to 5.4 millimeters long. They are long and fairly slender and can be determined by the color of their head and hemielytras . Their hemielytres are light brown to black in color and usually have a slightly reddish cuneus.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is widespread in Europe but is absent in parts of the southern Mediterranean. To the east the species is widespread as far as the Caucasus. It was introduced into North America by humans. It is widespread and common in Germany and Austria.

Way of life

The bugs live on common hazel ( Corylus avellana ), which is why they got their name. They suckle on the buds, young leaves and the immature reproductive organs of the plants. In addition, they also prey on aphids , leaf fleas and other small insects. Adult bedbugs appear from June, females can be found until August. They lay their eggs on the young shoots of the host plants.
