Physatocheila smreczynskii is a bug from the family of net bugs (Tingidae).
features
The bugs are 3.3 to 3.9 millimeters long. The representatives of the genus Physatocheila have downwardly curved margins on the pronotum and all three keels on the pronotum reach to the head. Physatocheila smreczynskii is similar to Physatocheila dumetorum , but this species is larger and has wider hemielytres in the middle . In Physatocheila smreczynskii, the dark-colored marginal area of the hemielytres has three and not two rows of cells. In the very rare Physatocheila harwoodi, the dark marginal area does not extend to the basal third of the hemielytras.
distribution and habitat
The species is distributed in Europe excluding the far north and the Mediterranean area. In the east, the distribution extends to Eastern Siberia, China and Korea. In Germany, the species is particularly common in the north German lowlands, in the south it is becoming increasingly rare and only occurs sporadically. In Austria, the species is found mainly in the Alpine region. The species is very rare in Great Britain and only occurs in the south of England. Food plants are colonized, both in shady forests and free.
Way of life
The animals live in Germany on the rowanberry ( Sorbus aucuparia ), less often on the cultivated pear ( Pyrus communis ). In Great Britain the species is also found on lichen-covered apple trees, in Eastern Europe on common bird cherry ( Prunus padus ) and other woody rose plants (Rosaceae). If there are many bugs on the plants, the puncture points on the underside of the leaves turn yellow and the leaves turn yellow prematurely in summer. The development corresponds to that of the other Physatocheila species. The females lay their eggs on the edge near veins on the underside of the leaves of the food plants.
