The Piața Timișoara 700 , colloquially Piața 700 , is a market square on Strada Gheorghe Dima , in the 1st district of Cetate in the Romanian city ​​of Timișoara . The square was named in 1966 on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the first written deed of the city in 1266.

The market square includes a vegetable and a flower market and is surrounded by representative buildings. On the square, in a restored corner building of the historic fortress, is the military chapel , first mentioned in 1801 , which was re-consecrated in 2000 after the patron saint Dumitru. A room for cultural events was set up in another restored casemate of the fortress.

In the north, modern buildings border the square, including the city's first data center (1970), the headquarters of the city's water utility Aquatim (2000) and the building for the Soil Improvement Agency (1981).

The Adam Müller Guttenbrunn House was opened in 1994 to the east of the square .

On the south side is the building of the military hospital (1754), where in 1843 an operation under anesthesia was performed for the first time in Romania. The old civil city hospital (1744), which today houses the clinic for oncology and dermatology, is also located here.

The west side of the square borders on the eye clinic, which is located in the former Franciscan convent. who came to Timişoara from Belgrade in 1737 . Before the eye clinic, a bronze statue was after 1990 on a small lawn target man to commemorate the victims of the revolution of 1989 with a view to Piata Timisoara 700 built. Next to the eye clinic is the Church of the Brothers of Mercy (1748–1753), which was transferred from the Roman Catholic Church to the Greek Catholic Community after 1900.

Project Piața 700

The project of the city administration Piața 700: Poarta catre center (German: Piața 700: gate to the center ) envisages a two-story glass building for the market, an underground car park with 700 parking spaces and a spacious pedestrian zone. The project was presented in 2008 by Mayor Gheorghe Ciuhandu in the urban development studio on Strada Alba Iulia No. 1.
