Piatra Mare Mountains

The Piatra Mare Mountains (German Hohenstein , literal translation "Big Stone" ) with the highest peak of the same name (1,843 m) is a small mountain range southeast of Brașov in Romania . It is part of the Munții Bârsei (Burzen Mountains) and lies on the border of the Eastern and Southern Carpathians .

It has a relatively small extension of about 5 km in the west-east and about 10 km in the north-south axis. It is limited
- in the north of the Burzenländer valley with the town of Săcele ,
- to the east of the Gârcinul brook ,
- to the south of the foothills of the Baiu Mountains and
- to the west of the Timișul brook .
description
The Piatra Mare Mountains consist mainly of limestone and flysch . The rock forms a ridge that runs predominantly in a north-south direction, from which more strongly structured side ridges descend to the west, whereas the mountains drop off quite steeply and uniformly to the east.
economy
The uninhabited ridge is partly used as pasture. Forestry also plays a role in the area, which is predominantly covered by coniferous forest.
tourism
The mountains are a popular hiking area. Apart from the unwooded summit, which allows a free panoramic view in all directions, there are also sights
- the ice cave Peştera de Gheața ,
- the Șapte Scări gorge in the Șipoiaia valley ,
- the Tamina Gorge in the Valea Pietrei Mici valley .
In the center of the mountains is the Cabana Piatra Mare mountain hut .
