The Piazza Giulio Cesare is the square on the edge of the historic old town of Palermo , exactly opposite the main entrance of the main train station , which was laid out around 1886 at the same time. It represents an important inner-city traffic hub. The name was given in honor of Julius Caesar .

The square consists of a central, oval green area with the equestrian statue of Viktor Emanuel II , who was revered as the "father of the fatherland", and some trees. The wide area for buses and private transport runs counter-clockwise around the square. To the south, the portal of the train station that extends over the entire width of the square, to the north the pair of high-rise buildings, which, also designed as a portal, make up the beginning of Via Roma . As an extension of the elongated square, the two important streets Via Lincoln lead to the east and Corso Tukory to the west. Flanking these two streets and the portal of the main train station, broad areas for shady trees are planned.

history

The square is located above the foundation walls of the southern flank of the medieval city wall, which was razed as a result of the Risorgimento . On behalf of the Minister for Public Works and Mayor Francesco Paolo Perez (1812-1892), the square was laid out between 1880 and 1885; its official inauguration took place on June 7, 1886. Instead of the city wall, wide boulevards were built based on the French Haussmannisation model . The design of the square with its eclectic architecture was completed with the completion of the building complex opposite the train station (1924–1936). In the course of this construction project, the extension of Via Roma to Piazza Giulio Cesare was completed in a third construction phase in 1920.

It was only with the rise of fascism and in line with Mussolini's imperialist aspirations that the square was named after Julius Caesar, the great Roman politician and writer.
