Acquario Romano

The Acquario Romano (Roman Aquarium) is located in the square. The building was designed by Ettore Bernich and built between 1885 and 1887. It was only used as an aquarium for a few years. In 1891 the building passed from the Società dell'Acquario Romano to the ownership of the city of Rome. Over the years it has been used, among other things, as a venue for trade fairs and exhibitions and also served as a depot for the nearby Teatro dell'Opera . Today the Acquario Romano is home to the Casa dell'Architettura, an organization promoting Roman and contemporary architectural culture. The Casa dell'Architettura organizes exhibitions, conferences and other events in the Acquario Romano as part of its objectives.

The building has typical features of the architecture from the era of King Umberto I on. The floor plan is circular with a pronaos and aedicules containing statues with a maritime theme.
