Manfredo Fanti (born February 23, 1806 in Carpi near Modena , †  April 5, 1865 in Florence ) was an Italian general .

Life

Fanti was born near Modena to Antonio Fanti and Silea Ferrari Carbolani. He attended the cadet school in Modena, was admitted to the Modena Pioneers in 1825. In 1830 he graduated in mathematics and gained the rank of lieutenant engineer . In February 1831 he took part in the attempted uprising against Duke Franz von Modena and the Austrians , organized by Ciro Menotti . After the failure of the uprising, however, he was arrested and forced into exile after the Austrian intervention. Fanti fled to France and joined Spanish services in 1835 . Here he distinguished himself in the fight against the Carlist with particular bravery and was promoted to colonel in the general staff in Madrid .

In 1848 Fanti returned to Italy and entered the service of the Provisional Government of Milan as Major General . Here he was given the protection of Karl Albert personally, which he had to protect from the anger of the people after they had concluded a truce .

Fanti then fought against the Austrians in the service of the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont in 1849 , led a brigade in the Crimean War and the Sardinian 2nd Division with distinction in the Italian-Austrian War of 1859 . Eventually he took over the leadership of the combined forces from the Provisional Governments of Tuscany , Parma , Modena and Romagna .

In 1860 Fanti entered the first Italian cabinet under Cavour as Minister of War . He reorganized the Italian army, improved the fortresses of Pavia and Pizzighettone , renewed the army facilities and destroyed the papal troops under Lamoricière in the Marche and Umbria . As Chief of the General Staff of Viktor Emanuel , he was also successful in taking Mola and Gaeta in southern Italy .

As early as 1849 Fanti became a member of the Chamber of Deputies in Piedmont, and in 1860 he was appointed senator . When Baron Bettino Ricasoli formed his ministry in 1861, Fanti took command of the 5th Military Department.

Manfredo Fanti died in Florence on April 5, 1865.
