Ciro Menotti
Ciro Menotti (born January 23, 1798 in Carpi , † May 26, 1831 in Modena ) was an Italian freedom fighter.
Life
Ciro Menotti campaigned for an unification of Italy early on . In 1817 he joined the secret society of the Carbonari , and from 1820 he maintained contacts with French liberals. His political goal was the liberation of northern Italy from Austrian rule and a democratic state. At the beginning of 1831 he prepared a revolt for this purpose . On February 3, 1831 the uprising failed, Menotti was arrested by Austrian troops and after a short trial executed .
In 1879 the city of Modena erected a monument to Ciro Menotti in front of the ducal palace. Because of his commitment to the Modena uprising and because of his tragic death, he is considered one of the most important figures in the Italian unification movement .
