Picconia excelsa is a species of the genus Picconia and thus from the family of the olive plants (Oleaceae). The generic name honors the Italian clergyman and agronomist Giammaria Picconi (Giovanni Maria Piccone) (1772-1832).

Picconia excelsa is a tree that reaches heights of up to 18 meters. Branches and leaves are bare. The branches are round, white and have lip-shaped white lenticels. The leaves are 2 to 5 centimeters wide, usually broadly eilanzettlich, leathery, with entire margins, rarely slightly serrated, with a rolled edge, finely dotted at a distance and narrowing winged into the stalk. The flowers are white. The corolla tube is short to absent. The crown is deeply split into two columns, with each of the two parts itself being in two parts. The fruits are olive-shaped, pointed on both sides and dry.

Occurrence

Picconia excelsa occurs on the Canary Islands El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife and Gran Canaria as well as on Madeira.

Related species

The only other species in this genus is Picconia azorica (Tutin) Knobl. It occurs in the Azores.
