Remains of the Piependammer Siels (2014)

The Piependammer Siel is an abandoned Siel in the Weserdeich farming community, municipality of Berne , in the Wesermarsch district of Lower Saxony .

In 1769 a canal was built from the Ollen to the Weser with a sewer in Piependamm. The Ollen has been draining the Stedinger Land since time immemorial . The newly dug, a good one kilometer long canal and the sluice are intended to protect against flooding in extreme times.

After the Lichtenberger sluice at the Ollen estuary was put into operation in 1924, the sluice in Piependamm was abandoned and finally closed in 1963 as a consequence of the storm surge in 1962 . The parapet wall of the inner head has been preserved from the sewer.
