Pierre à Cambot

The Pierre à Cambot is a boulder in the forest of Vernand-Dessous, northwest of Romanel-sur-Lausanne in Lausanne in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

The visible volume of the block is 50 m³, but according to the cantonal geology museum its underground part should be just as large. The total weight could be 267 tons. It is a conglomerate , a sedimentary rock from the Carboniferous period about 300 million years ago, which is identical in Dorénaz near Martigny.

The Pierre à Cambot was transported here from the Rhone Glacier during the last Ice Age . This stretched from the Rhone Valley to the Jura massif, where it divided. One part went towards Lyon, the other east towards Solothurn. At its peak 25,000 years ago, the glacier in Lausanne reached a height of almost 1,400 meters, almost 800 meters above the current location of the Pierre à Cambot.
