Pierre Boitard

Pierre Boitard (born April 27, 1789 in Mâcon , † August 25, 1859 in Montrouge ) was a French botanist and geologist .

One of the earliest descriptions and classifications of the Tasmanian devil came from Boitard . The natural scientist George Harris described the marsupial devil for the first time in 1807 and gave it the scientific name Didelphis ursina . In 1838 the devil was renamed Dasyurus laniarius by Richard Owen . The name did not last long, however. Pierre Boitard assigned the species to the genus Sarcophilus in 1841 and renamed the species to Sarcophilus harrisii accordingly .

In addition to reclassifying the marsupial, Pierre Boitard is also known for his fictional natural history Paris avant les hommes (Paris before man). It did not appear until after Pierre Boitard's death in 1861. In this story he describes the life of a prehistoric and ape-like human ancestor, whose life took place in the Paris region.
