Pierre Chenal (born December 5, 1904 in Brussels , † December 23, 1990 in La Garenne-Colombes ) was a French film director and screenwriter .

Live and act

Chenal was originally a journalist and turned to film in 1927. He began with experimental short films and has directed feature films since 1933. In 1935 he realized the implementation of Dostoyevsky's novel Schuld und Atonement .

His subsequent works, which revolved around love and prostitution, passion and crime, were very popular with the public. After the occupation of France, Chenal fled to South America and continued his career in Argentina and Chile. He returned to France during the 1950s. With his new films, which were again characterized by erotic elements, he could no longer build on earlier successes.
