Pierre Colmez (* 1962 ) is a French mathematician.

He studied from 1981 at the École normal supérieure and received his doctorate in 1988 at the University of Grenoble with Jean-Marc Fontaine and John Coates . He was professor at the École polytechnique and is professor at the Institut de Mathématiques à Jussieu at the University of Paris .

Colmez deals with number theory , especially p-adic L-functions and Galois representations . In 2005 he received the Fermat Prize for this . In 1998 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin ( Representations p-adiques d´un corps local ).

He is the editor of the Grothendieck- Serre correspondence with Jean-Pierre Serre .

Between 1982 and 2002 he was French Go champion (5th Dan) four times (1995, 1997, 1999, 2001 ) and nine times runner-up.

Laurent Berger is one of his doctoral students.
