Pierre Daumesnil

Pierre Yriex Daumesnil (born July 14, 1776 in Périgueux , † August 17, 1832 ) was a French general.

Daumesnil initially served as a soldier in the army of Napoleon Bonaparte and rose there up to the Général de brigade . In the battle of Wagram he lost a leg, which was replaced by a wooden prosthesis and earned him the nickname jambe de bois (English: "wooden leg"). As commandant of Vincennes , he successfully defended the city's fort during the March of the Coalition Armies during the Sixth Coalition War .

On 27 February 1831 he was commissioned by King Louis-Philippe I of Title général Lieutenant- awarded.

Honors

His name is entered on the triumphal arch in Paris in the 8th column. Today a larger than life statue in front of the Vincennes town hall commemorates the general.
