Pierre-Ernest Prins: self-portrait , drawing

Pierre-Ernest Prins (born November 26, 1838 in Paris ; † January 21, 1913 there ) was a French painter and sculptor.

Life

Pierre-Ernest Prins initially oriented himself towards the painters of the Barbizon School , of whom he particularly favored Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and Charles-François Daubigny . In the 1860s he was a regular guest in the artist's café Guerbois , where he met Édouard Manet , with whom he became a lifelong friend. In 1868 Manet portrayed the violinist Fanny Claus (1847–1877) for his famous painting The Balcony . Prins married Fanny Claus in 1869, whom he may have met through Manet. Other artist friends he for example in tourist restaurant du Père L'auberge Fournaise in Chatou met, belonged Albert Charles Lebourg and Armand Guillaumin .

Prins did not take part in any of the group exhibitions of the Impressionists from 1874 to 1886 and initially had no commercial success with his pictures. It was not until 1890 that the Georges Petit Gallery in Rue de Sèze dedicated an exhibition to him. In 1897, the art magazine La Revue des Arts paid tribute to the work of Pierre Ernest Prins and compared his work with those of Théodore Rousseau and Jean-François Millet . In addition to cityscapes, Prins mainly created landscapes. Here he mostly worked in pastel technique . In his pictures there are often motifs such as haystacks or villages of the Île-de-France , where he pays great attention to the representation of the sky and shows a preference for moods of the evening sun. His painting style was close to the impressionist painting of his friends and is influenced by symbolism in his late work .
