Pierre Guiraud
Pierre Guiraud (born September 26, 1912 in Sfax , † February 2, 1983 in Paris ) was a French linguist , Romance scholar , lexicologist and etymologist .
life and work
Guiraud studied in Montpellier and completed his habilitation in Paris in 1952 with a thesis on Langage et versification d'après l'oeuvre de Paul Valéry , in which he worked with language statistical means. After working mainly abroad (Romania, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Wales), he was first appointed to a professorship for Romance languages at the University of Groningen , then in 1963 to a chair for general linguistics at the University of Nice . At the same time he taught in Bloomington and Vancouver. Guiraud developed a rich publication activity in the areas of literature-related language statistics and style , the structural history of the French vocabulary, etymology , sexual vocabulary. He also wrote 19 textbooks on all disciplines of linguistics in the famous Que sais-je ? the Presses Universitaires de France. In 1985, students and friends dedicated the commemorative Hommage à Pierre Guiraud to him (ed. Charles P. Bouton, Etienne Brunet and Pierre-Jean Calvet).
