from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pierre Meystre (born May 7, 1948 in Yverdon ) is a Swiss physicist who deals with quantum optics and atomic physics.

Meystre studied at the EPF Lausanne (diploma 1971) and initially wanted to be an experimenter, but in 1974 he turned to theory in his dissertation. As a post-graduate student, he was with Marlan Scully at the University of Arizona . From 1977 he was at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Munich. In 1983 he completed his habilitation at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1986 he went back to the University of Arizona, where he is Regents Professor of Physics and Optical Sciences and from 2005 to 2007 was the head of the physics faculty. He has been Regents' Professor Emeritus since 2016 .

It deals with theoretical atomic physics and quantum optics of the laser theory to cavity QED ( cavity QED ). With Murray Sargent, he wrote a standard textbook on quantum optics.

In 2002 he received the RW Wood Prize of the Optical Society of America , of which he is a fellow. For 2014 he was awarded the Willis E. Lamb Prize . He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science . He received a Humboldt Senior Scientist Award. He was the Simons Foundation Lecturer at the State University of New York (SUNY). He has chaired the Committee on Atomic Physics, Molecular Physics, and Optical Physics of the National Research Council and the related division of the American Physical Society, and on the Council of the Center for Ultracold Atoms at MIT and Harvard University and the Center of Nonlinear Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory .

2013 Meystre was lead editor of the journal Physical Review Letters of APS and 2016 then Editor-in-Chief of all Physical Review he resigned journals of the APS, an office of the 2017th

From 2007 to 2016 he was director of the B2 Institute at Biosphere 2 .
