Pierre Vigny specialized in savate and expanded his own style. He also defined his style of La Canne , fighting with a stick and self-defense.

In 1886 Vigny joined the 2nd French Artillery Regiment in Grenoble. He left the army in 1898, founded a weapons and self-defense school in Geneva, and then moved to London, where he became head coach of Edward William Barton-Wright's Bartitsu Club .

In 1903 he opened his own academy of self-defense in London, at # 18 Berner Street. At that time he married young Miss Sanderson who became his assistant trainer. He also became a close combat instructor in the Aldershot garrison .

In 1912 Vigny returned to Geneva and established another martial arts school there.

Stick fight to Vigny

Vigny is best known today as the founder of his unique style of stick fighting, which systematized and redefined the use of walking sticks and umbrellas for self-defense.

His patron EW Barton-Wright adopted many of these findings in his series of articles "Self Defense with a Walking Stick", published in "Pearson's Magazine 1902. Essay on Pierre Vigny's stick fighting method".

In 1923, Superintendent HG Lang, officer of the Indian police force, published the book "The Walking Stick Method of Self Defense", which was heavily influenced by Vigny's system. In the 1940s Lang's book became the basis of self-defense training for numerous Jews who settled in Palestine. Since Palestine was under a British mandate until 1948 and carrying a firearm was punishable by death in the worst case, the walking stick to Vigny offered the Jews a real alternative to be armed against Arab attacks.
