Damn is a collaboration album by hip-hop musician Basstard and DJ Korx. It was released on February 16, 2007 on the independent label Horrorkore Entertainment . The production of the sound carrier was completely taken over by DJ Korx.

background

In 2005 MC Basstar's first collaboration album Dogma (Against the Time) was released , which he recorded with hip-hop musician Taktlo $$ . One year later the sound carrier Horrorkore Mixtape Part 1 was released . On this, the Berliner presented himself together with the rapper Massiv, whom he had signed a few months earlier . At the end of 2006 Basstard released a best-of album, which was released under the title The Little Man's Biggest Hits . After that, work on the third collaboration, Damn it, began . These lasted three to four months. Damn it is MC Basstard's seventh studio album.

Musical style

Like the previous albums by rapper MC Basstard, Verdammt can also be assigned to the hip-hop subgenre horrorcore . In its German-language version, this was largely influenced by MC Basstard. The thematic examination of mythology, melancholy and occultism is one of the characteristics of this music. The descriptions of scenarios that are borrowed from the plot of horror films can also be found in horrorcore. In addition to the horror elements typical of Basstard, there are also songs on Verdammt that can be assigned to battle rap for the first time .

Texts

Horror scenarios

Logo of the label Horrorkore Entertainment

The album contains various pieces that deal with suicide , murder and satanism . The song Schrei focuses on mental disorders . The person addressed suffers nightmares and increasingly gets into their problems (" With every scream, the darkness takes over your soul, and then your body, it is only over when you free yourself. "). The piece ends with the person's suicide (“ One last scream silences your life, the knife eats its way into you… ”).

“It sits in you, so deep and tight, wait until it hurts you, sucks on your soul and robs you of your existence. From the outside nobody can see how the thoughts keep turning, a whirlwind of anger and pain, the parasite is well nourished. Well taught, you look into the void and have no strength to move. You are weak and have no power over your body, you are like a boat without a rudder, helplessly circling in the ocean. The only way out of misery is when you get rid of your bitter pain. Do you notice the truth The inner voices, they drive you crazy. Without knowing what they were doing to you, you obeyed them and then you got sick. Whenever you can't anymore, when you stand before the abyss, don't give up and go ahead and shout out that you are still alive! "

Another example is the piece Says my name . In this MC Basstard describes himself as a rap demon and stylizes himself as a murderer and cannibal . In the chorus, the audience is repeatedly called upon to say Basstard's name:

“Say the name that means nothing good. Do it now or you will be skinned. Tell me what the killer is called. I am the predator that will tear you away with his words. Tell me who is your daddy I come to visit you in dreams like Freddy . Say it now or be quiet, you're nothing but juicy meat for my grill. Tell me how do you want it Raw, bloody or well done. Tell me what is the name of the cannibal Armin Ms Ahne . Say it on your last prayer. I shaped the heretics with my albums. Say my name, scream it out. It's purgatory , it's getting hot in the house. "

- Third verse of the song says my name

Critical texts

In addition to the description of scenarios that are similar to horror films, critical texts can also be found on Damn . So Basstard in You do not believe in horror criticizes the habit of many people not to deal with global problems or to declare them non-existent (" You do not believe in horror because you close your eyes, I see the sad war. No tears, it is blood that sheds. Hope is dead because courage has failed. "). The main problem described is armed conflict. In the second stanza, Basstard denounces that humans are "part of a race that is self-destructive".

“People don't believe in horror, but I live among you like a ghost, like a lonely old man. In the idyll of your existence there is a crack, a huge bite wound. And nobody wants to see it, nobody wants to understand why eyes go down in tears. While refusing to smile, they long for endless death. There is nothing more to laugh about when the final solution looms. This world is no place for the children to play, in this world there is only room to die blindly. You can't lose much if you don't know freedom. There are fighters who scream out of the body until it burns. Whole cities in ruins, who should care? Soldiers are sons of praying mothers. So the ball spins, further and further into nothing, I want to get away from the darkness, finally into the light. "

- First verse of the song You don't believe in horror

Despite the consistently negative mood of the song, Basstard concludes you don't believe in horror with a positive outlook on the future: “ But if we manage to see our mistakes, we can also manage to go on living. "

Guest Posts

Guest contributions by Berlin rappers can be heard on six of the total of 17 songs on the album. Gynecologist , who is known for his pornographic texts, is represented on the pieces We go on and live or die . Since the album serves the genre of horrorcore , you can also hear Schlafwandler, Sicc and Jayson on Damn . Like Basstard, they deal with morbid topics in their songs. The rapper and porn producer King Orgasmus One is represented in the song Gothik Rap . He has already worked with the artist MC Basstard on various recordings. Chuky, who is best known from the gynecological environment, has a guest contribution to the piece of music Honor and Pride . In addition, the Berlin Crime members Manny Marc and Smoky are each involved with a verse in the song Live or Die .

reception

The reviews of Damn were average. Of the German hip hop magazine Juice was Damn rated 3.5 out of possible 6 "crown". The sound carrier thus received a mediocre rating. However, the tenor of the review can be seen as positive.

“Although the text is far more subtle than the splattery early work, Verdammt describes exactly the musical paths that made Obscuritas Eterna a classic of the genre: Dark, threatening melodies meet hard, synthetic beats in Memphis construction. […] As far as content is concerned, it is as usual aloof to fatalistic - that Basstard's texts not only arise from a dark fantasy fed by horror films and occultism , but also like to draw their inspiration from this reality, which is not poor in horror, as proven by several tracks: You do not believe in horror can not only be read as a pessimistic end-time vision, but also functions as a parable of society's habit of ignoring war, violence and destruction from everyday life and only negotiating it as a matter of the news and the newspaper. […] A must for horrorcore and BC fans, of course, but Verdammt also offers one or the other textual highlight for friends of the really rich rhyme. "

- Excerpts from the review of Juice magazine

The German hip-hop magazine backspin Reviewed Verdammt 2.5 of possible 5 rating points. The sound carrier thus received an average rating.

“His haltingly monotonous rap style turns into acoustic purgatory on DJ Korx's sinister productions, to which the rest of the Berlin Crime Camp and the Satans disciples from Osnabrück chilling in the cemetery contribute their part. For atmospheric reasons, Korx even takes a look at Metallica's back catalog (“That’s my world”) for his beats and of course doesn’t do without the obligatory horror film scores, which doesn’t miss its effect. A song like “Ehre und Stolz” has a strange aftertaste, however, because the lyrics would also make sense in a different context. Good for those who know how it is meant. Overall, "Damn" is definitely not a milestone, but a surefire thing for genre fans. "
