Master of the ceremony -

Master of the ceremony is the sixth solo album by the German rapper Basstard . It was released on June 26, 2015 via Horrorkore Entertainment and Distri .

background

Following the release of the album Zwiespalt (Weiss) , Basstard briefly dealt with esotericism before starting work on another album in Düsseldorf together with producer Johannes M. Arend. He interrupted this to study audio engineering at the SAE Institute . Through this, Basstard was able to generate “ know-how ” as well as establish contacts for the later album production. For example, he got to know the SAE lecturers Timo Krämer and Sebastian Metzner, who were involved in the creation of the album. According to Basstard, Krämer in particular was “ conducive to the album ” through his musical abilities, such as playing the violin and electric guitar .

In early January 2015 Basstard announced the release of a new album. At the end of March, the album title was set with Master of the Ceremony and June 26th as the release date. The title refers to the term “ Master of Ceremonies ”, abbreviated to “MC ”, as a synonym for rappers. After calling himself MC Basstard for a long time , the rapper decided to drop the suffix. Since this was largely ignored in the media, the album title should draw the recipient's attention to the name change.

The announcement of the track list as well as Prinz Pi and gynecologist, MC Bogy and Manny Marc from the bass crew as guest musicians took place on April 1st. In contrast to Basstard's first albums, the number of guest rappers is significantly reduced to Masters of the Ceremony . The rapper only thought about whether an adequate guest musician should be asked after the pieces were recorded or whether it should remain a solo song.

Guest Posts

Compared to Basstard's previous albums, the number of guest rappers has been reduced to Masters of the Ceremony . For the piece Pablo Picasso , the rapper worked with Kontra K, Ozan and Sido. Sido is a “ wonderful artist ” who can skillfully “get to the point ”. With his 2013 single, One of these stones , Sido first published a song from Basstard's point of view that took a different direction and had a lyrical quality. A planned collaboration with Kool Savas , which had already been planned for the previous album Zwiespalt (Weiss) , could not be implemented due to lack of time.

Versions

Master of the ceremony appeared in three versions. In addition to the Standard Edition, which comprises 17 tracks, an Aer Edition was released on which the songs Wach auf! , Asmodeus and Dark Angel are included as bonus titles as well as the instrumental versions of the pieces. Furthermore, a limited metal box was released under the title Incendium Edition . This contains all the songs and the corresponding instrumental versions of the Aer Edition as well as a candle, matches, a T-shirt for MDZ , A6 sticker, an A3 poster, a signed certificate and the 3D radio play Der Widder Gottes .

A spell is shown on the cover of the Incendium Edition . This is a protective device against demons and the devil that takes effect when the person concerned is inside the circle. Basstard chose the cover as a “ symbol of wishful thinking ” in him, “to be safe from all the bad in the world. "This gives a" message "to the listener who thinks he is angry, although in truth he" would prefer to be in this spell so that he himself is not affected ".

Basstard described the cover of the Standard Edition as a “ snapshot ” of a boy holding a parent's hand through a shop window and seeing something “ totally crazy ” that “ shocked ” him and possibly shaped him “ for the rest of his life ”. In order to find a suitable child for the cover, Basstard published a child's photo of himself on the social network Facebook and linked this with the question of who knew a child who was similar to him. A few children were invited to the cover shoot, whereby one was ultimately chosen that, according to Basstard, had the right acting talent in addition to its visual similarity.

Video excerpt for "MDZ"

MDZ received a video implementation as the first song on the album. At the beginning of May 2015, the release of Nur ein Basstard , which was filmed by Augen Maß Productions , followed. The Hamburg production company Film Fatal took on the implementation of the play Antimatterie . In mid-June the video for Don't be so depressed was released . This was created under the direction of Alexander Benzler and Christian Haseroot. AlmatyFilms was responsible for the production of the video. At the same time as the album was released, a video about Pablo Picasso was also released . Another video was shot about Humanoid and published on the YouTube channel Aggro.TV.

In addition to the visual implementation, a snippet , in which the pieces from the album are presented in part, was published under the name "Antisnippet". In addition, the piece “ Don't be so depressive” appeared on Juice CD No. 128 of the hip-hop magazine Juice .

reception

success

Masters of the ceremony entered the German album charts at number 24. It is the first Basstards release to make it into the charts.

Criticism of the visual implementation

Sebastian Weigelt took up the visual implementation of the piece MDZ in a commentary on Deutschrap videos . Basstard plays with a “ certain mysticism and its aesthetics. Goblets full of wine, women, insects, sceptres, animals, ritual orgies and other occult elements ” are used to “ tangibly represent ” the “ mystical aura ” of the fictional character. “As a recipient, he“ cannot avoid admiring the entire work as such. “Due to the“ built-up atmosphere, the tension arcs and the topic ”, the viewer is“ almost drawn into the video ”.

Musical criticism

The e-zine Laut.de rated the master of the ceremony with four out of a possible five points. According to the editor Dani Fromm, Basstards “ album seems so unified, in spite of the inconsistencies in terms of content and personnel, that it really shouldn't be legally allowed. "One moment the rapper juggles" as the sinister high priest of his community [...] with religious and occult motifs ", while" in the next moment he juggles a borderline cheesy love smack to the 'girl from the east' '[voice] or Indira Weis [... ] as 'Princess of the Street' [engage] and with her I put a rock-solid swing pop number on the floor ”. The producers Johannes M. Arend and Timo Krämer " illustrate Basstards contradicting, and yet so coherent words with the right sounds ". With the bonus titles Asmodeus , Dark Angel and Wake Up! deliver the rapper the " old horror core basstard ". Even if Basstard is “ still not the most sophisticated rap technician and certainly not a gifted singer ”, he says that “ conjuring up atmosphere […] nobody can fool him so quickly. "

Daniel Fersch criticized the album for MZEE.com. In his opinion, Basstard “continues the path of 'Weiss' in a much safer and more stable manner. “The rapper's voice is particularly emphasized. For example, the rapper uses “ just on 'Just a Basstard' […] eight different ways of speaking ”, whereby the “ transitions […] are so deliberately set with regard to the instrumental that the voice changes and the crescendo of the beat is almost fit together perfectly. “While the track MDZ convinces with“ skilfully fast rap parts and powerful hook ”, Wanderlust is characterized as gentle and soulful. Basstard convinced “ narrative, croaking nastily or rapping focused on the technology ” as well as “ singing, nagging, with a fast but also slow flow. "

In a review by Backspin Hip Hop magazine , master of the ceremony was rated eight out of ten. According to the editor, the productions have something “ very epic, epoch-making about them ”, which means that they “would probably also function as film music without any problems ”. With regard to the mood of the album, the release is said to be varied. It contains both " rather oppressive, scary tracks ", " but also lighter, happier tracks that are almost poppy ". The guest contributions are also praised as a “ successful addition ”. With wanderlust and girls from the East, Basstard " actually reveals something of his emotional world ". In addition to the album, the limited edition includes a 3D radio play. This stands out from the " otherwise usual, small gifts in fan boxes ". In summary, the four-year wait for the master of the ceremony was worth it.
