The Pietrain (or Piétrain ) pig breed is a brightly colored pig (i.e. it is black and white spotted or spotted) with erect ears, which is of great importance in pig breeding today.

history

The breed originally comes from Brabant ( Belgium ) and is said to be descended from the meat-rich Bayeux pigs that arrived in Piétrain around 1920. The breed was insignificant until the 1950s. By shifting consumer habits from fatty pork to lean pork around 1950 , this breed became established across Europe. The breed then spread very widely and was also used in Germany from 1960. The breed has been the most important father breed in pig breeding since around 1970 .

Breeding goal

Pig breed with medium frame, best muscling (high proportion of lean meat with the lowest amount of fat), good vitality , medium fertility and rearing performance , correct legs and stress stability .

Data

Fully grown about 80 cm shoulder height, weighs around 300 kg; daily gain in fattening pigs more than 800 g. Lean meat content of the animals: in pure breeding higher than 60%, in crossbreeding for fattening higher than 55%. Feed conversion better than 2.4 (i.e., less than 2.4 kg of feed is required to produce 1 kg of pork).
