Piibe (German Piep ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the Estonian rural community of Rakke in the Lääne-Viru district . It has 64 inhabitants (as of 2007). Piibe is about 37 kilometers north-northeast of the town of Rakvere ( Wesenberg ). The village was first mentioned in 1282.

Good Piibe

The Piibe manor was founded in 1663 as a split from the Liigvalla manor ( Löwenwolde ). From 1772 (or 1757) the estate was owned by the noble von Baer family . Magnus Johann von Baer (1765–1825) was born in Piibe . From 1815 to 1818 he was knighthood captain of the Estonian knighthood .

The most famous resident of the place was his son, the Baltic German naturalist Karl Ernst von Baer . The founder of embryology was born in Piibe in 1792. From 1834 to 1866 he was the owner of the Piibe estate. The estate was expropriated in 1919 as part of the Estonian land reform .

The former wooden mansion was demolished in the late 1920s. A few outbuildings have been preserved, including the administrator's house with its pink facade. In 1960 a memorial stone for Karl Ernst von Baer was inaugurated in the courtyard of the former estate. In 1976 the varied park with its pond was extensively renovated.

A previously very important road connection between Tallinn ( Reval ) and Tartu ( Dorpat ) is named after the Piibe estate , the so-called “Piibe maantee” ( Piepsche Landstrasse ).
