Pikefossen in summer ...
… and in the winter

The Pikefossen ( North Sami : Nieidagorži ) is a high rapids or a waterfall with a height of eight meters in the Altaelv . It is located in the Norwegian province ( Fylke ) Troms og Finnmark , about 18 kilometers south of Masi and 35 kilometers northeast of Kautokeino directly on the trunk road ( Riksvei ) 93. There is a parking lot with toilets and a campsite near the rapids.

The Sami name Nieidagorži translates as a girl's case . According to an old legend, a girl should look after a herd of reindeer in winter. When the ice at the edge of the Altaelv River tore, all the animals collapsed and drowned. When the owners got home and found out about it, they were so angry that they threw the girl into the waterfall. It was narrated that those who stay in the huts near the waterfall can hear the girl's heartbreaking screams at night.
