Pilecki Park

The Pilecki Park (until 1945: Steinhoffpark , Polish : Park im. Rotmistrza Witolda Pileckiego ) is located in the south of the city of Zabrze (German Hindenburg OS ). The park is surrounded by forest and has 79 tree and shrub species. Three red oaks ( Quercus rubra ) grow in the park , which are estimated to be 120 to 150 years old.

The park was created between Zaborze and Paulsdorf as a people's and sports park by the director of the Königin-Luise-Grube Walter Steinhoff (1872–1923) for the community of Zaborze . The park was later named after its founder, Steinhoff Park . On June 29, 1924, a monument to Walter Steinhoff was unveiled.

After 1945 the park became park im. Gene. Karola Świerczewskiego was renamed and a monument to Świerczewski was erected. The Steinhoff memorial was destroyed. At one of the entrances to the park, two lion sculptures by Schadow were placed, which presumably came from Gleiwitz . In December 2008 the park was named after Witold Pilecki in park im. Renamed Rotmistrza Witolda Pileckiego . In September 2010 a memorial for Witold Pilecki was erected.
