Pilosocereus flexibilispinus is a species of plant in the genus Pilosocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet flexibilispinus means 'with flexible spines'.

description

Pilosocereus flexibilispinus grows tree-shaped with a distinct trunk, is branched above the base and reaches heights of growth of up to 8 meters. The upright, gray-green to bluish shoots have a diameter of 5 to 12 centimeters. There are 9 to 11 high, narrow ribs with crooked transverse furrows. The thorns are yellow to brownish red. The 3 to 11 protruding to bent central spines are 1.7 to 3.1 centimeters long. The spread out 14 to 20 radial spines are 11 millimeters long. The flowering part of the shoots is very distinct. It includes most of the ribs near the tip of the shoot. From the areoles there arise up to 2.3 centimeters long, gray hair and up to 7.5 centimeters long, flexible thorns.

The wide-opening flowers are up to 4.8 centimeters long and reach a diameter of up to 2.8 centimeters. The spherical to slightly depressed fruits have a diameter of up to 3.6 centimeters, tear at the sides and contain a red pulp.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pilosocereus flexibilispinus is distributed in Brazil in the southeast of the state of Tocantins , in the northeast of the state of Goiás and in the west of the state of Bahia on limestone rocks at altitudes of about 600 meters.

The first description was published in 1990 by Pierre Josef Braun (* 1959) and Eddie Esteves Pereira (* 1939).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Near Threatened (NT)", d. H. listed as low risk.
